After owning their home for 19 years, these homeowners decided it was time for a major update to their kitchen. As a military family, they had spent time away from the area while renting out the house before eventually returning. The kitchen still had its original oak cabinetry paired with dark granite countertops installed by the previous owners. A temporary update involved painting the cabinets black, but that only made the room feel darker.
“I wanted to enjoy my kitchen and be happy every time I stepped into it,” the homeowner said.
The homeowners visited the Cabinet Discounters showroom in Springfield, VA and met with designer Kevin Yarbough. That first meeting ultimately made their decision on who to work with an easy one. “My first meeting with Kevin, the designer, went so well and I felt totally comfortable working with him that we went ahead and committed.”
Because this was a complete gut renovation, Kevin worked with the homeowners to rethink a layout that presented several challenges. The new design uses Homecrest Cabinetry with Sedona Painted doors in two finishes. Alpine Opaque was used throughout much of the kitchen, while Lakeside Opaque was used on the large center island. The two finishes help separate the island from the perimeter cabinetry while keeping the same door style throughout the room.
The new layout centers much of the kitchen around the island, which provides additional storage, workspace and seating. Along the window wall, cabinetry runs beneath the large bank of windows with the farmhouse-style sink centered in the space. The homeowners say the changes have made a noticeable difference in how they use the room. “The flow of the layout is so amazing now. No more dead ends! The center island brings everyone together.”
Vicostone Limnias quartz was selected for the kitchen countertops, including the island. A separate coffee and wine station was also incorporated into the design, with glass-front cabinets, wine storage and its own countertop and full-height backsplash in Cambria Mayfair quartz. The homeowner now considers the coffee and wine bar one of the focal points of the finished kitchen.
The renovation began in January at the same time a major snowfall arrived in the area. Despite concerns that the weather would delay the start, installer Brian was able to make it to the project and keep work moving. The project also required several design changes along the way, including an issue getting the originally expected material for the coffee and wine bar. The Cabinet Discounters team worked with the homeowners to find an alternative and complete the space.
After living with the finished kitchen for four months, the homeowners say the new layout has accomplished what they wanted from the renovation. “Overall I have been very pleased with the entire process, even the hiccups,” they said. “I would highly recommend Cabinet Discounters and Kevin as your designer!”
