This week’s featured project comes from the Cabinet Discounters showroom in Olney, MD. Designed by Heather King, the kitchen uses a two-tone cabinet layout that separates the island from the surrounding cabinetry while keeping the overall design consistent throughout the room.
The kitchen features Brighton Cabinetry with Churchill Flat doors. Maple White was used for the perimeter cabinetry, including the cabinets around the sink, cooking area, refrigerator, and wall. The white cabinetry works well with the other light finishes in the room and helps keep the kitchen feeling open and bright, despite the amount of storage included in the design.
For contrast, the large center island features the same Churchill Flat door style in Maple Onyx. The dark finish gives the island its own identity while tying in with the dark wood flooring. The island also provides a large work surface along with additional drawers and cabinets.
Storage was an important part of the layout. Tall cabinetry surrounds the refrigerator and double ovens, making use of the available wall space and giving the appliance area a built-in appearance. The cooking area includes drawer storage below the cooktop and cabinets on either side of the hood. Around the farmhouse sink, a combination of drawers and cabinets keeps frequently used items within reach.
The Maple White and Maple Onyx combination allows the island to stand apart without introducing a different cabinet style. Details such as the chrome hardware, paneled cabinet ends, turned island legs, and cabinetry extending close to the ceiling help carry the same design throughout the space.
The finished kitchen shows how a light perimeter and dark island can work together in a traditional layout while providing plenty of storage and workspace for everyday use.
