This week’s featured project from Cabinet Discounters highlights a full kitchen renovation designed out of our Mt. Airy, MD showroom by Wendy Ames. The goal for this space was to create a more open and usable layout while keeping a comfortable, lived-in feel that fits the rest of the home.
The new layout centers around a large island that serves as both a prep space and a gathering point. Finished in Homecrest Cabinetry’s Sedona Painted door style, the island uses the Haven Opaque color to bring in contrast against the perimeter cabinetry in Mystic Opaque. The added storage on all sides of the island helps keep everyday items within reach, while still leaving plenty of seating for casual meals.
Along the perimeter, the cabinetry was designed to maximize function without overcrowding the room. A clean run of cabinets surrounds the range and sink wall, with a window over the sink bringing in natural light. The stainless appliances are spaced to allow for easy movement between cooking and cleanup zones. A secondary counter area near the refrigerator adds flexibility for serving or small appliance use.
The countertops throughout the kitchen are Vicostone Costa Nova quartz, providing a consistent surface with subtle movement. The backsplash uses Florida Tile Storied Cotton White 2.5″ x 10″ ceramic tile, installed in a horizontal layout that keeps the look simple and ties in with the cabinetry. The combination keeps the space bright without feeling overly stark.
One of the more unique elements in this project is the mix of textures around the room. A section of floral wallpaper and a wood accent backsplash area help break up the white cabinetry and add some character. The existing brick feature was also left in place, giving the kitchen a connection to the home’s original structure.
The kitchen opens directly into the adjacent dining and living areas, making it easier to move between spaces. The updated layout supports both everyday use and larger gatherings, with clear sightlines across the entire main level.
Overall, this project focuses on improving how the space works day to day. With a balanced mix of storage, seating, and open space, the kitchen now fits the needs of the homeowners while still keeping a straightforward design.
