If you’ve decided to age in place in your home, then it’s important to consider the fact that you may need to remodel in order for that to be a possibility. Making your home more accessible for the future can be a great investment now if you plan on staying in your home long term. A local family was looking to upgrade their home, and knew they would have to make some improvements.
“When we made the decision to age in place, we knew we needed to add a full bathroom and additional living space to our split level home.”
The family decided to work with Cabinet Discounters, because of our long-standing reputation, and products that we have to offer.
“We chose Cabinet Discounters because we knew the company had been in business many years and worked with manufacturers at different price points.”
They worked together with their own architect to design the new rooms which would be added to their home. They aimed to add a bathroom and a work space, and wanted to add new modern amenities, while also keeping with the style of the entire house, and take advantage of natural light.
“Christine Kelly, our architect, listened to us and drew a plan that would allow us to live graciously on one level. She called it our Manhattan apartment but it is also our light and airy cabin in the woods. The bathroom is large and will accommodate us when we are using a walker or wheelchair. The office is light filled.”
To being the selection process, the family visited the Cabinet Discounters showroom in Springfield, VA. Once inside our store, they met with designer Katie Kieler. Katie was able to listen to their desires, offer ideas and suggestions, and guide them throughout the process.
“Katie was wonderful to work with. She listened to us and then offered good options. We brought in samples of tiles chosen for the bathroom and she then refined the choices of cabinetry and countertops. Katie worked well with our contractor and followed through with every detail. Our contractor installed the cabinets Cabinet Discounters installed the countertops. Everything fit perfectly.”
Working along with Katie, the family selected Homecrest Cabinetry with Sedona Maple door style in Churro. The countertops are Vicostone Polaris quartz.
“We are very pleased with the results. Visitors and overnight guests say ‘Wow’ when they see the bathroom. The bookcases display pictures, glassware and frequently referenced books. We feel that this renovation has energized our current lifestyle and provided a hint of how the space will suit us in years to come.”
With their new space, the family now has everything they need to age in place. The open, modern bathroom gives them plenty of space to move around, and the home office provides an area for them to work, read, or just relax and take in the beautiful views of nature out the window.
