The kitchen island has become a “standard” feature in most kitchens today, often serving double duty as a working surface and place to eat and/or entertain. When remodeling an older kitchen, adding an island or making a current island more functional is often at the top of the “wish list” for most customers.
This was the case for the Leonards of Gainesville, VA who came to our Springfield showroom looking for design ideas for making their current kitchen more functional and improving storage capacity. Working with Richard Fox they designed a beautiful white kitchen with ample storage and a larger island that serves as the focal point and meets all of their expectations.
Floor to ceiling cabinets and the expanded island offer ample storage and details such as bookshelves, under cabinet lighting and crown molding lend a classic look to the new space. “That was the goal from the beginning – Maximize ease of storage, keep the counters clean, open and provide a longer island counter for Family and friends. It is a warm and welcoming space for all to enjoy.” Richard Fox
The backsplash adds texture to the clean white lines of the kitchen with mixed earth tones that blend with the neutral countertops. Tile chosen was from the Florida Tile Pietra Art Mexican Travertine collection, accented by Terra Green glass and metal random strips.
Cabinet Discounters: What made you decide to remodel?
The Leonards: Our former kitchen was lacking with storage space and we wanted a larger island. One that would accommodate more space for counter style eating while we would cook.
Cabinet Discounters: Can you describe your experience working with our people? (Richard Fox, installers, etc.)
The Leonards: Richard and everybody on the project were excellent, Excellent, EXCELLENT. On time, professional, accommodating, knowledgeable of the project/requirements and simply ready to start work from the moment they arrived.
Cabinet Discounters: How satisfied are you with the outcome?
The Leonards: Satisfied doesn’t seem to fit our feeling about the outcome…maybe beyond satisfied? Extremely satisfied?
Cabinet Discounters: How do you plan on using your new space? (cooking, entertaining, etc.)
The Leonards: We entertain a lot. A lot. The new space works really well for us. Our guest can sit comfortably while Linda and I serve, talk and everybody is a part of all things. Great gathering place.
Cabinet Discounters: Please add anything else that you’d like.
The Leonards: We are so pleased with this remodeling and so willing to show it off to potential CD customers. Neighbors stop by anytime knowing we are willing to do this. One last point I’ll make. We are in our 70’s and it’s becoming difficult for us to sit in or get out of the usual kitchen chair which is lower than the bar height chair. The bar height is the latest trend along with kitchen or dining room tables. A good trend for elderly folks.
