[BACK]   [KITCHEN LAYOUT GRID]

Start by measuring your Kitchen space. When you visit one of our showrooms, bring your diagram with you. This will give you a quick start in the process of designing a new kitchen or giving you a quick quote.

The diagram is easy. All you need is a tape measure, pencil, and a simple layout grid which you can print from this web site at any time. Simply click on the "GRID" button at the left. When the grid displays on your screen, print it by the usual means. You may want to print several in case you want to start over. Just be sure that you get all of the measurements written down. The rough drawing of your kitchen space should look like this...

Start by measuring the sink wall first. Start in the corner. Measure in inches to the edge of the window trim. Show the width in inches of each door and window on your diagram (as above). Label Window A, Window B, Door 1, Door 2, etc. Continue working clockwise around the room, recording all measurements, noting all breaks such as doors, offsets, etc.

At the bottom of your sheet, for each window and door, mark the width from the outside of the trim to the outside of the trim. For each door, write down the height from the floor to the top of the trim (label it "H"). For each window, write down the height from the floor to the top of the trim (label it "H") and the height from the floor to the bottom of the sill (label it "F/S"). Also, at the bottom of the sheet, mark the ceiling height.

Soffit is the bulkhead between the ceiling and the top of the cabinets. Distance from the floor to the bottom of the soffit should be at least 84". If you want to install an 84" cabinet, distance from the floor should be 84¼". Depth may vary, generally it is 13" (1" deeper than the wall cabinets). If you have a soffit, note the distance from the floor to the bottom of the soffit and the depth from the wall. Many designs do not use soffits, allowing for the use of extra high wall cabinets. The space above is simply left open.

Base Clearance is the space you need to fit new base cabinets with their countertop and backsplash beneath windows and electrical outlets. You should have 41" from the bottom of all outlets and windows on walls where base cabinets will go. If you have less than 40" there may be problems. Alert your designer if you have less than 40".
